Talk Title: Memento: Why Good Artifact Naming Matters 

Talk Abstract: Recently open sourced, Two Sigma originally developed Memento as a way for researchers on the AlphaStudio platform to contribute data pipeline code. We quickly found that how a researcher organizes and names things plays a large role in delivering a reproducible research result, with clear provenance. It turns out that clear naming and accurate metadata yields an added productivity and efficiency bonus: automatic caching! This talk will focus on how Memento presents an elegant solution to some of the most common data science research challenges, and will cover the current state of Memento and future research directions. 

Bio: Mark earned a BS and MS in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1999 and was a world finalist in the ACM International Computer Programming Competition in 1998. In 1999, Mark joined Sun Microsystems, Inc. as a founding member of the Java Enterprise Edition team and was a specification lead for the JavaServer Pages (JSP) 2.1 specification. Mark has spent the last 19 years working at Two Sigma in a variety of roles including Data Platform Lead, Infrastructure Group Head, Head of Architecture, Co-Creator of AlphaStudio, and most recently Managing Director of Metadata. On the side, Mark enjoys writing and publishing computer games, running, and spending time with his family, raising two boys and one dog.
